Fit as a Fiddle
You need an absolute advantage over the generally sloppy out-of-shape couch potato if you want to ski. Skiing requires fitness, which means being ready to do a push-up or a sit-up at the drop of a hat. While other sports require concentric movements, skiing requires eccentric movements. Three exercises that may help the novice master the fitness level necessary to ski are:
- The Lunge: Here you go down on one leg and then the other in alternate steps.
- The Squat: Here, you go down on your knees and then come up again.
- The Squat Jump: Here, you do a squat and then leap to the next move in the squat.
The fact of the matter is that you will need a series of beginners lessons in skiing if you are inexperienced. That is because the sport is the best preparatory exercise for itself.
If you are new to the sport, remember that just jumping into the deep end of the pool (so to say) is the most dangerous thing you can do. Pre-intermediate level participants tend to ski on blue runs and don’t reach the mountains yet. At the intermediate level, red runs are an ordinary course that those who ski take. At the high intermediate, even black runs become a usual routine. When you reach the advanced point, all pistes are free for the practitioner. Entering the advanced all-mountain level, things get steeper and more exciting not to mention dangerous. Finally, you can feel confident that you are doing the right stuff at the expert rider degree. You have reached the height of expertise and are a master of your art. The only place to go from here is to be an expert professional. This means you can get playful and invent your movements while skiing.

While doing any extreme sport does not mean that you will die on the first attempt, there is always the chance of injury. Nobody wants to be bed-ridden for six months to a year, so it is best to save your skin in the long run.
While studying under an instructor, you will have to part with some of your cash, so save up for the occasion. As you progress through the green, blue, red and black runs and enter the pistes and mountainous regions where the art takes on a life of its own, you will notice that time and effort pay off.
